"Outdoor Advertising" Industry Clogging Up Ross County Skies

When I lived in Columbus, I traveled down to Lancaster and Athens several times. It seemed that every time I went southeast on US Route 33 there were more and more billboards clogging up the sky. Of course, they were doing nothing but keeeping up with the increasing traffic, development, and congestion...

Is the same happening to my home county? Perhaps at a slower rate, but those obnoxious billboards are slowly increasing in population, especially where I travel on the north and west side of Chillicothe.

I already count seven on Western Avenue / US Route 50 between Cabbage Hill and Slate Mills, most of which are double-sided and double signed on each side - that's four signs per billboard! Of course, that stretch of road is now clogged with every other bit of unsightly development and congestion...

In only two places have these signs come down - and both were simply relocated, with the result of even more signage surface area, at a new location.

The two signs on the north side of the Dunlap Schoolhouse on SR 104 just south of Fairgrounds road simply moved a bit farther north to the other side of the road, grew taller, and doubled in size.

The same happened to the signs on the side of the former B&O Railroad facing SR 104 at the US 35 interchange - they moved, I believe, to the former railroad bed along US 35 - and in the path of the recreational trail - just northwest of Adena Road.

Billboard gone from side of former B&O railroad on SR 104 north, between railroad and US 35, view southbound. Chillicothe/Union Township, Ross County, Ohio, USA.
