A Fun and Educational Visit to the Wilds of Scioto Township

The annual "Amphibian Walk" drew a large crowd to the Earl H. Buzzard's Roost Preserve off Polk Hollow Road in central Ross County. Temperate weather and plenty of kids made the hike enjoyable.

The crowd of about 35, maybe a fourth of them kids, trooped off to find critters.

Even a recent, barren pit that held water also held fascination. A lone wood frog had apparently taken up residence and "plunked" under water when we approached.

Water + Kids = Fun! It's also educational with a few guiding adults. The old farm ponds of the preserve yielded plenty of cold, slimy, creeping fun, which is perfect for kids.

The murky, jellylike globs are frog and salamander eggs laid in the shallows of a pond.

A salamander squirms at the light of day as its rotten log home is lifted and it gets 15 seconds - or more like 60 seconds - of fame.
