Municipal Building

A last generation Foursquare public building

This is a public building (formerly a school) surviving in the small town of South Bloomfield, now modified and reused as the community / municipal building.

South Bloomfield was founded in 1804 and is best remembered as a stagecoach stop. Modern highway development has unfortunately degraded its character, and less and less of the small town's character is visible along US 23 which bisects it.

Located at 5023 South Union Street in west central South Bloomfield (Zip 43103), Pickaway County, Ohio, USA. The building is at about UTM 17 329539E 4398197N (NAD83/WGS84) viewable on a Topozone USGS topographic map.

The south and the front (or east) elevations. A recent photo shows the cupola that originally graced the peak, instead of the dingbat gablet on it now.

Other replacements include the first floor windows, whose fake muntins do not match the original four-over-four sashes.

The southeast corner windows are only half the width of the other windows; their location under the stairway probably explains that.

A doorway was added to the west end of the south first floor, probably in the 1920s or 30, judging by the solid concrete work and curved edges.

A center rear chimney has apparently been replaced with the current stovepipe.

This view of the east (front) and north elevations show an addition to the north side, appparently a cafeteria - now used as town offices.

This crop of a recent photo, a few years old, posted on the South Bloomfield website, shows the building before recent alterations.

This selection of an 1878 bird's-eye-view map of the town shows the building earlier in its life.
