Close Encounters of the Third Kind
This is my most favorite science fiction film. The combination of many elements create a sense of wonderment, hope, and promise. The music is fantastic--I feel this is the best Steven Spielberg/John Williams film. The special effects are fantastic, especially considering when the film was made and what is now possible. Those lens flares were such a novel thing then, and made it so realistic and yet dreamy. Even with the Speilbergian grey-men-from-the-government crawling all over, the everyman wins the day.
The idea of a musical interworld language is great, and the depiction of it is even better. The five tones are beautiful. And I love it when Williams interpolates "When You Wish Upon A Star" three time in the last encounter scene.
