"What are we doing here? Who are we? If this is a chance to find
out even just a little part of that answer...I think it's worth a human
life. Don't you?"
My most favorite Science Fiction/Speculative Fiction movie is
Close Encounters...but
Contact
now ranks right up there with it. The movie affected me in many ways...
...words just can't describe it...
(Sorry...I could't help myself...)
I have not yet read the book, so I can't compare the two. But as a film, Contact is technically and artistically wonderful. After five viewings, the CGI, the transitions and and the pacing are all still impressive. Carl and his co-workers did a good job of avoiding science/faith/humanity cliches, even turning them on their heads to some degree--a scientist saying "they should have sent a poet," a missionary discussing the relevence of science. Sure, it's a little melodramatic, but it's good storytelling.
