Sons of the American Legion

The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) is a program of the American Legion that was established in 1932 to assist the American Legion with their programs and activities. The American Legion, The Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary form the "Legion Family" which boasts a combined total membership of nearly 4 million members.

In 1919, the same year the American Legion was founded, Ross County Post 62 was formed in Chillicothe and since that time has partnered with the city and county to serve this nation’s veterans and promote patriotic values throughout the community. Along the way, SAL Squadron 62 has acted as the Legion’s alter-ego in preserving our American traditions, improving the quality of life for children, caring for veterans and their families, and teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship.

Squadron 62 routinely assists area youth through their involvement in programs such as the Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs, the American Legion Memorial Scholarship fund, Project Santa Claus, the Special Olympics and the American Legion Child Welfare program. In addition, Squadron 62 has long sponsored two youth baseball teams in the community and it promotes patriotism as it coordinates youth volunteers in flagging veterans’ graves throughout the county each Memorial Day weekend. Later in the year, Squadron 62 conducts the area's oldest flag retirement ceremony.

Squadron 62 has always honored our nation’s veterans through their support of the American Legion’s Gifts for Yanks program and in recent years, they have taken the initiative further by implementing a program to provide appreciation baskets to the widows of area veterans and in hosting an annual Veterans Day dance in honor of all veterans. In addition, Squadron 62 has been at the forefront of several major community initiatives to memorialize area veterans including being the major contributor in the restoration of the Soldier’s monuments at the Bicentennial entrance to Chillicothe’s Yoctangee Park; participation in the planning, construction and dedication of Ross County’s beautiful new World War II Monmument and Veterans Memorial Park.

Congratulations to the 7th District's
